Make Placemats with Your Preschooler

You will need:
  • construction paper
  • markers
  • magazines
  • contact paper

You can each make placemats by drawing pictures, cutting and gluing pictures from magazines and printing words related to a theme such as food, animals or toys. When finished, apply contact paper to protect the placemats.

While creating and using the placemats, you can:
  • talk about what you are doing, so your child can learn new words.
For example, you could say, “I am picking this giraffe to cut out.”
  • talk about problems and how you could solve them.
For example, you could say, “We can’t find pictures of breakfast foods. What can we do?”
  • discuss your themes.
For example, talk about which foods are good for breakfast and which foods are healthier.
